Knowledge exchange between the Netherlands, Flanders, Suriname and the Dutch speaking Caribbean islands

The Nederlandse Taalunie facilitates the exchange of knowledge on Dutch studies and Dutch language education between the education sectors in the Netherlands, Flanders, Suriname and the Dutch speaking Caribbean islands. The results can be found on the Taalunieversum website, these include an easy-to-search databank with research into  teaching methods for Dutch and a website, Taalforum (Language Forum) with advice on how to deal with language learning difficulties.

Dutch studies abroad

Every year, more than 15,000 students all over the world study Dutch as a foreign language: in the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as in countries such as Georgia and Indonesia.

The Taalunie supports Dutch studies outside the Dutch language area in many different ways. Where a university is in the process of setting up a new department or expanding the curriculum of an existing department, the Taalunie provides support and ideas as well as financial assistance for the basic needs of the department. It also offers research grants and extra training to encourage foreign specialists in Dutch to broaden their knowledge further.

The Taalunie also offers a range of facilities for students to assist them in their study of Dutch. Every year, almost 300 excellent foreign students of Dutch are welcomed in the Netherlands and Flanders for a summer course on Dutch language and culture. These summer courses are organised by the Taaluniecentrum Nederlands als Vreemde Taal (Taalunie Centre for Dutch as a Foreign Language) in Brussels.

Finally, the Taalunie promotes collaboration between professionals. A list of available funding opportunities can be found on taalunieversum.org/en/grants system for Dutch studies abroad.

The centre also organises events to promote Dutch and offers testing, examination and qualification materials for foreign students.
